I’ve been coming to Aldeburgh, Thorpeness and Southwold for holidays since I was a child. Our family now owns Crag Cottage, a holiday cottage available to rent in Aldeburgh which I visit all too rarely.
This site started as a photo project editing the pictures you can see above. I was inspired by an artist Ros Donaldson who painstakingly drew every building on the Aldeburgh Sea Front in ink and watercolour. I wondered if I could do the same with a camera using the software which came with it. The answer was “no”; clever as the software is, my computer wouldn’t join up the 60 photos along the sea front which make up the tracking panorama of the buildings along the Sea Front. In particular, it can’t handle the parallax around the lifeboat station. More recently I’ve taken some panning panoramas of the beach from just in front of the new Lifeboat Station and the Scallop which my PC knits together better than I could by hand.
In 2013 the project grew, with CountrySideViews I can work a little closer to home with a series of panorama cards now on sale at the National Trust’s West Wycombe Park and also in use on their web site.
